Rapper Billy Woods has quietly built a reputation as a top tier talent among hip hop fans. His new collaboration with producer Kenny Segal is called Maps and Jim and Greg agree it may be the album gets him mentioned in the same breath as people like Kendrick Lamar.

Jim and Greg pay tribute to the late singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, as he died May 1, 2023 at age 84. They also play one of Greg's favorite songs, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Shemekia Copeland

Shemekia Copeland was born to be a blues singer. Her father, guitarist Johnny Copeland, took her out on tour when she was still a teenager. Now on her eleventh album (Done Come Too Far), Jim and Greg agree that she is among the greatest blues singers alive. Greats like Koko Taylor and Mavis Staples sing her praises and a few months ago Copeland sang at a special Sound Opinions live taping.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
