The Velvet Underground and Nico

The Velvet Underground Nico The Velvet Underground & Nico (45th Anniversary Edition)

One of our all-time favorite classic-album dissections, The Velvet Underground and Nico, a record that we think sounds as fresh, unique, and inspirational today as it did when it was released in March, 1967. Or, as Jim’s rock-crit hero Lester Bangs put it: Modern music begins with the Velvets, and the implications and influence of what they did seem to go on forever. We talk about the album and The Velvet Underground’s many sonic innovations, and chart some of those influences, and as always, we look forward to having you along for the ride.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
