After my attempt at year-end hype for Fucked Up's monstrous Hidden World lp in the Pop-Punk/Punk/Emo thread, fizzled pitifully, I was too depressed and demoralized to try to turn people on to Jay Reatard's just-as-shockingly-great-if-not-better Blood Visions. Then it hit me: Why not start a new thread for "this" type of music?

What I'm talking about:
Stuff that's a bit rock-rolly, maybe more 60s rock and 70s/80s punk/hc influenced (and, for context, the originals as well). There's probably a bit of overlap between the categories, but I reckon they've got some common appeal.
"Psyche": The Move, Blue Cheer, Pink Fairies, 13th Floor Elevators, Acid Mothers Temple..., Comets on Fire, maybe Mudhoney
"Garage": the Sonics, Back From the Grave, anything by Mick Collins, Jack Yarber and/or Jeff Evans, maybe the Kinks, Pretty Things
"Punk": Misfits, Crime, Negative Approach, Jay Reatard, Dee Dee King

So here it is. I imagine it could triangulate with the Metal and Noise Rock threads as a kind of catch-basin for stuff that isn't quite classifable as either of those already-broad genres.



Jay Reatard - Blood Visions
As Burzum mentioned on another thread, this is finely crafted, supremely catchy, but abrasive punk not-quite-rock (but be assured, it rocks) done by one guy all by himself, recorded by primitive means. He is/was in The Reatards and Lost Sounds, two bands that always kindasorta intrigued but never fully clicked with me, and when I saw he had a solo record coming out, I figured I'd maybe hear it one day, but didn't list it anywhere near a priority. HOWEVER Tom Scharpling played a few cuts one night and I knew immediately I had to hear the whole thing, um, immediately. I promptly stole it off the internet, and was hooked (I now own the record, and may just buy the cd, since my burned copy is sure to get trashed in the car). I think I had this as my #4 of the year, but it's more of a #2 or 1, really, sounding, I dunno, fresher(?) than either the Melvins or Fucked Up records (my respective officially-tabbed top two). yeah, "You're Gonna Miss Me." I heard it, went over to check the TV, and saw the Dell logo. It was weird.

Probably more shocking (I wouldn't be surprised if Roky didn't own all of his material (and he wasn't the only songwriter in the Elevators either, right?)) was the recent Wal-Mart commercial soundtracked by the Dirtbombs.

Coed guitar/organ/drums trio from Philadelphia, a town which seems to have become a sort of Idealized History of Ohio Music lately, with this band straddling the territory between Devo and Guided By Voices. Put out by the great and recently-reactivated Siltbreeze label, who're best known for some earlyish GBV singles and most of the Dead C's US releases. Also, the Strapping Fieldhands, near and dear at least to me. Needless to say, their cultural contribution in the form of tape hiss is without peer.

At one time, Kenny Rogers brother owned the entire 13th Floor catalogue, but I believe that's been rectified recently.

Also, I don't know if anyone else read the now defunct Crutch (Chicago music zine-turned-blog). Anyway, during the blog phase the author did a phenomenal series on garage rock called the "The Movement That Never Was". www.thecrutch.blogspot.com, go to the July 2006 archives.

THE OBLIVIANS

Oh, what a band. These Memphis guys had a pretty novel angle on the two-guitars-drums-no-bass gimmick of the early /mid 90s: All three of em wrote and sang songs and switched off between both instruments. Greg, Jack, and Eric Oblivian (nee Cartwright, Yarber, and Friedl) appeared in 1993 in the wake of a semi-disastrous '68 Comeback tour upon which Greg and Jack, the two constants in the Compulsive Gamblers decided to fuck it all and just go ahead and rip off Pussy Galore (kind of). Absurdly raw recordings, super great songs, almost as pure a representation of 'rock and roll' as a form as can be imagined. Here's one of their albums, called Popular Favorites :


They put out a bunch of great records, but as time went on, Cartwright became the creatively dominant one, and they split up in 1997 after recording the entirely Greg-written collaboration with Quintron The Oblivians Play Nine Songs With Mr. Quintron. Greg and Jack revived the Compulsive Gamblers for two more fine albums - more on them in the future. Since then, they've all been busy releasing tons of stuff in various bands (Greg in the Reigning Sound and briefly, the Deadly Snakes; Jack in the Tearjerkers, Cool Jerks, Knaughty Knights, South Filthy and as "Jack Oblivian"; Eric in the Dutch Masters and as the proprieter of the Goner label and store (and breaking up hasn't slowed the Obliv.s release schedule too much, either - they've put out four or five posthumous records and played a handful of reunion shows)). Here's a good one:

That Fucked Up album is INCREDIBLE!!! Easily the best punk disc I've heard all year, it's a shame I had to hear it this week instead of a month or so ago.

Edit: and the album by First Blood is the best old school hardcore disc I've heard in 2006. Pure insanity. "NEXT TIME I SEE YOU YOU'RE FUCKIN' DEAD!"

Their first album. Pretty good record, don't know too much about this band's history, as I barely heard them before I caught Jay Reatard Fever last month (detailed at the top of this thread). Not for snobs- recording fidelity makes Sebadoh sound like Queen.
