They just don't make 'em like this anymore. They just don't. They try to, mind, but it don't work. Rock for fuckin' light!
Bleep Blop
I love Soul Brains

Alan
If there were any justice in this world, any cosmic order whatsoever, Bad Brains would be millionaires, throwing monkey wrenches into the machine from their yachts, and that cougar fat City cops plugged with bullets would still be around.

I don't think this is true.

Who tries to be like Bad Brains?
Heatseeker
noone dares, they did it in a late 70's, rock is dead, jazz is dead, fusion is dead
everything 's just rotting under fading sun...
Alan

This guy tries. Look at him...he's trying so hard. But he's coming up short, smokin' shorts & mackin' on shorty. What a fool.

This fella' tries, too - and hey, he was tougher than a bucket of roofing nails on fire, totally committed to going across the middle, but he can't fuse thrash & jazz so you've got to flunk him.

Then there's these guys. What the hell are they trying pull off here, huh?

Bad Brains just played a show in D.C. last month and it was AWFUL. The band played pretty well, not great but they hit the notes, but H.R. just didn't give a fuck. He barely moved up there, squintingly read lyrics from a sheet, and acted as if this was the last place he wanted to be. Pretty depressing.

Tragic when hometown heroes let down their fans - Corgan's made a decade long career of it now. But let's not dwell on that - let's celebrate when a simple H.R. 'Jimmy leg' followed by spontaneous tumbling onstage, backflips 'n whatnot, could set off a Bad Brains show like a riot. I never saw 'em, actually...aside from on film and stuff. And rock docs. Really wish I would've seen them in their 80's hey day...

How was H. R. with Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, I wonder?

edit: er, that was him, wasn't it...? No?

you know, i have a couple Bad Brains records, but i have never really been all that crazy about them.

so i will just say it... what's the big deal? they always just sounded like american 80's hardcore to me.

underrated... my favorite brains.

altho 'rock for light' might just be the classic, idk. you'd think the demos on the s/t would be better than that album but its not totally true. basically all records thru '86 are worth jamming
Alan
Pfffft, the nerd who collects Archer Prewitt guitar picks is dismissing Bad Brains. PFFFFT! Why don't you go rush to the front at another Johnny Rzeznik solo show, you Johnny Rznznik fanatic. Pfffft.

Bad Brains would crush your favorite band(s) in a cage match. Darryl Jennifer would put Dave Bidini in a headlock & choke the life out of him. Fact. Dr. Know would peel Tim Harrington's face off with his fingernails.

Like the band, but I bought their album from last year and it was pretty much the worst music I heard in 2007.

For me it was always about the live show when it came to Bad Brains. I can dig on the albums, but none are my favorites.

who is Johnny Rzeznik? is that the Goo Goo Dolls singer guy?

i'm not dismissing Bad Brains, i just want to know what distinguishes them in the hardcore world... i know that a lot of my favorite artists cherish them as a band and a movement or idea, but i guess maybe because i wasn't there to experience it i don't see it as clearly.

i want to believe. help me, Alan. help me believe.

You mean you can't apply your Theory of the Universal Chord to this circumstance? You can't strike a shiny silver triangle with your Mallet of Divination then focus those dulcet waves towards appreciating Bad Brains' deserved place in the plentiful River of Music? I thought times like this were tailormade for big ol' ladelfulls of the mysterious Theory of the Universal Chord! wink.gif Actually...that might make for an interesting thread - folks thoughts on the magical Theory of the Universal Chord and the Galactic River of Tunes and Tones.

Seriously, though, Bad Brains are way fuckin' better than your puh-china art rock - how can you not 'get' them? Four dudes play rock music faster, badder and leaner than anyone has before or since while twisting heads with jazz, thrash & reggae in the soup.

in the early 90's while i was living in Canada, my room-mate was in a band called Trigger Happy and they toured with Bad Brains, but i think this was when they had HR replaced. anyway, they said that Bad Brains were some of the most spooky dudes they have ever experienced, having creepy rastafarian "ceremonies" on the bus everyday and constantly smoking weed. they also said that they were total assholes to women in general.

i just remembered this and maybe this is why i'm blocked on them. memeory is a hell of a drug.

is one of the best albums ever.

I was and am a big fan of the Bad Brains (favorite back in the day was I Against I, but nowadays, I really dig Black Dots), but I understand the sentiment of, why are these guys such legends and other bands like, say, MDC or DOA are basically fading into the forgotten? Part of it is BB put on an absolutely rippin’ live show, and the band were real musical pros. But part of it too was the sheer fact that it was four black guys playing hardcore, a point driven home when they’d pull out one of their weird dub songs.
