Full Version: Joke Rock - Who Counts, who doesn't?

This conversation started with talking to someone who really likes Weezer, Cake and....someone else...

I said, "oh, you like joke rock", thinking that I knew exactly what that entailed.

She said she could maybe see where this was a genre, but argued that Cake DEFINITELY didn't count. For some reason I get that same impression from them. I mean...christ, they covered I WILL SURVIVE.

So, I'm looking for bands that have a strong sense of humor, and are probably wittier than thou.

I'm thinking:

Weezer
Cake
They Might Be Giants
Pavement

maybe Ben Folds?

What do you think? Does Why? count?
Pavement Ist Rad
"Joke rock"... that's about as bad as "hard pop."

I didn't really see the hilarity in "Hurt" until I heard Johnny Cash do it.

Some great responses and, as usual some shitty ones. As always I'm interested in the bigger discussion, but I'm also trying to group some things in my mind together and I'm looking for further thoughts on bands that fit the DESCRIPTION (not necessarily the title, which apparently some people take offense at, but I could hardly give a fuck.

My problem with The Darkness and Electric Six (and maybe Junior Senior, Senior Coconut, Richard Cheese) is that it's too obvious. They're funny to me because they're aping a style that is particularly funny, but...it's not what I'm talking about. The phrase "witty" has come up a couple of times.

The D seems more like COMEDY ROCK. Same reason I haven't included Weird Al (although, obviously TMBG is somewhat close to this also).

I'm not sure what keeps the surfers out of this definition for me (besides that I like them. Not to say that I don't like ANY of the bands that fit this description.

Green Jelly see above, but Dead Milkmen is pretty right one.

I'm not completely sure what this is getting at, but it seems pretty. Songs like Spinal Menengitis or Reggaejunkiejew seem to fit the description. Oh, and Daisies, definitely.

If this is some sort of comment about what music fans like, I'd like to point out that I'm a pretty vocal Radiohater, whereas I really like a lot of Ween (mostly God Ween Satan).

In the end, Ween doesn't REALLY fit what I'm trying to find, I think. I find a lot of parallels in Weezer, Cake, Fountains of Wayne. Looking for more of these. Ben Folds too, I guess.

fuck rap honestly im serious when i say all rap is a fucking joke, number one theres no instruments except for real shit liek the roots, uh in case you forgot sampling an instrument doesnt count as actually playing it it just counts as stealing get a fucking clue niggers (no disrespect to eminem hes pretty good no homo i dig "stan")... anyone can press a button wow doesnt make it talent... number two heres the lyrics to every (ok not really) rap song "got some bitches some drank/money in the bank" cool, even rappers know that rap is bullsh*t now because theyre all trying to "sing" and i say that lightly, have you ever heard t pain or kanye, they use audacity 7.1 to just make their voices sound like singing... uhhhh its a start but try real singing talent next time have you even heard iron miaden before...
Pavement Ist Rad
Let's just refer to bands with goofy lyrics as "quirky" and leave it at that.

Listening to the new Brighten the Corners, and I have to say Pavement too. Maybe Modest Mouse.

Didn't I say that?

I assume it's sarcasm that most people think radiohead is really good?

But I agree, radiohead is serious rock. That's one of the reasons they suck.

Along the lines of Fountains of Wayne, I'd say Tally Hall fits the bill. They call their style Wonky Rock.

I'd also include 90s alt metal band Scatterbrain. Don't Call Me Dude and Down With the Ship were great.

Therimin, how many CDs did you download this year? j/k, I know it was way too many for anyone to actually listen to.

Check the itunes ID tags and I bet you not one song has the genre Joke Rock.

Not saying I tunes is always right, but you just made up a genre and then asked other people what bands were part of it. weird.

I was talking to my friend about My favorite Giant Black Dicks bands, and he said Wu-Tang Clan don't count cause they don't play their instruments. what do you all think?

Gbro
Upper Crust, for sure.
