All right everyone, the time has finally come and the End Of Year polls are opening up.
Singles Lists are due Saturday, December 20. There aren't any exceptions to that. You've got about three weeks, so there shouldn't be any problems with people not having enough notice. Also, let me know when you submit your list if you are interested in writing blurbs for the top 40 singles.
I haven't completely decided on the timeline for the results threads, but I think the singles results will be done over a few days the week of Christmas.
Just to go through the guidelines again:
-You can vote for as few as five 2008 singles or as many as one hundred 2008 singles.
-Singles include:
1. Songs with released 7 or 12", CD, or clearly identified digital singles bearing their name
2. EPs of both 5 songs and 22 minutes less (if either is greater, than it is eligible for the albums list)
3. Songs with a video (assuming not live, and assuming the artist didn't make one for every song on the album)
4. Songs that have charted on any major US or UK chart (except for download)
5. (New this year) Singles released between December 2007 and December 2, 2008. Anything after that should be considered a 2009 release
-Voting for a single can include B-Sides and Remixes of the song on the same vote.
-To submit your list, either post it in the thread or PM it to me. Any list posted in this thread in countdown form will be considered a final list. If you need to make a change once your list is submitted, you can only swap one single out to replace with another. Also, if you can please format your numbered countdown as ARTIST - RELEASE NAME, that will really help me out when tabbing them.
-2007 vs. 2008 eligibility is broken down as follows--if you can make a case for it being 2008, you can vote for it. So
that includes singles released in your country for the first time in 2008, singles that didn't receive wide exposure or peak on the charts until 2008, or singles that were released in Dec. 2007 and didn't have enough time to sink in before voting last year.
-New this year: Singles that received votes last year that are still eligible for the 2008 poll will carry over 10% of their 2007 total. Looking quickly at last year's post-100 results, no single that was voted for last year will receive more that the equivalent of a #32 vote. This is just an experiment this year and if it doesn't make a difference in the results, it will be forgotten about just like negative votes in 2005.
-Finally, nothing that was on our Top 100 Singles of 2007 list is eligible. You can not, under any circumstances vote for anything that made the top 100 singles last year. So seriously, don't vote for "Paper Planes." Just so you know, these 100 singles are:

If you're unsure that a song is a single, check rateyourmusic, discogs, or wikipedia. Also, we're had a bunch of single suggestion threads to take a look at for ideas (although I would always double check somewhere else to make sure that it really counts as a single just to be sure).
Also, one last thing I just want to remind everyone about. If there is a single that you're really passionate about but not many others know of it, don't wait until we start the countdown to complain about it not being higher. Use this thread to make sure that everyone else is made aware of it before it is too late to vote.

Paul, question. Air France's "No Way Down" EP is about 22 minutes. It happens to be six tracks with one of those being sort of a little instrumental bumper. I think it makes a lot more sense to look at it as a single/EP, but if this is a hard and fast rule, I guess it could go in albums instead...

Well, I understand the need to stick to rules. Personally I think with EPs runtime is more important because you could have an ambient EP with two tracks that were 11 minutes each, which would be nearly as long as the Emeralds album from this year, and that would qualify as an EP, but you could have another EP with six two-minute punk songs, and that would be counted as an album. But I understand the rules aren't going to be perfect all the time, so I'll put AF in the albums.
The rule for qualification on the singles chart here is "no more than 4 songs and no more than 25 mins." 6 tracks does seem a lot for a single. I'd be up for considering an EOY EP chart in the next few years as the format is only likely to become more popular.

2) This hasn't come up this year yet, but the thing I did last year was once I got the lists I didn't check for eligibility until the final list was ready. Then I went through and got rid of anything in the top 100 that didn't fit. It saves me a lot of time that way. Hopefully what should happen is that if anyone votes for something that wasn't an official single, not enough other people would have made that mistake to have it end up in the top 100. But if it happens, I'll deal with it once all the lists are in.

No, I'm going by the chart rules here which now say 'no more than 4 songs' and less than 25 mins. So it's a EP / mini album, works better like that as well I found.
