All kinds of awesome. Thank you for the update.
Chicken Invaders!
I've listened to a few of the new songs on youtube, and...well, I dunno. The way they've been touring lately it's just been a bunch of synths and electronics and keyboards and everything, and there don't seem to be many good songs in there either. I dunno. "Brother Sport" kind of sucks, but what's being called "House" (believed to be "My Girls) has got a cool melody. But these things need to be fleshed out more in these studio versions for me to be able to embrace them, I think. But will see. But seriously guys, pick up a guitar. That's what made Sung Tongs so awesome.
Hans Christian Anderson
you gotta be fucking kidding me that this is the album title. these dudes were/are deadheads/phisheads indeed.
Tongue-Tied
I'm actually excited to see where their more "electronic" vibes take them. Maybe it's because I'm biased towards electronic-based music, but AC fucking around with more electronics makes me giddy. very giddy.
simakos
some more guitars would be nice.
Tongue-Tied
some more synths would be lovely
maxexactly
some more cowbell
Dr. Rosenpenis
Depending on the day and the mood, you're both right. I alternate pretty frequently between which AC full-length I'd call my favorite. At this point, dudes have earned the right to do whatever the hell they want IMO. I'll still be going nutz w/ anticipation at the prospect of a new album, regardless of whatever kick they're currently on.

Quick Edit: Oh, and what max said.
Chicken Invaders!
I don't know, just from what I've heard, if all they've got going is the cheap sounding bullshit they've been doing live lately...well, I might not be a fan of this record.
gringo
all you doubters shuuush!
its going to be amazing!
August West
I'm a huge Dead fan, but I don't understand why they'd name the album this. It just doesn't really make any sense.
Hewletts Daughter
i liked these guys a lot at the pitchfork music festival

i also have liked their albums

so i should be excited for this.

forgive me, but what does the title have to do with the Grateful Dead?

forgive me, but what does the title have to do with the Grateful Dead?

From what I know, the venue (MPP) is best known for the Dead shows that took place there and the eventual banning of the group.

Who knows if that's behind the title, but with all their endorsements of the band over the past few months, it just kind of makes sense.
Easily Fooled
best news ive heard all year

and im totally excited that they have continued in the direction they are going. even with the increasing use of electronics/synths/etc, they still have rock solid melodies/grooves. of course the live shows/youtube clips are going to sound more stripped, but if you enjoyed strawberry jam and the water curses ep, i dont see how you cannot be looking forward to this one...
The Luscious Phil
Let's see. Animal Collective are at their best when their music is folky and rustic.

I can't imagine that going in the other direction will make my ears happy.
August West
I think Spirit They've Gone and Strawberry Jam are their best and they certainly aren't folksy/rustic.

Plus Brother Sport is badass.

I'm excited.

See I'd say the only two albums I return to are "Here Comes the Indian" (quite often), and "Sung Tongs" (every once in awhile).
August West
Here Comes the Indian is actually a little much for me.
poopinmybutt
woo, i'm excited for this. i've always liked some songs here and there until strawberry jam, which i loved. and the water curses ep / "safer" are maybe my favorite material yet, which seems to be the direction they're moving in...very excited for this.
Johnny's Shack
I agree with whoever said the songwriting on a lot of the new live tracks is lacking. A lot of those jammy songs, like Brother Sport and Pan Flute Jam, are awesome live, but could be boring on record like My Morning Jacket if they don't tinker with the structure. Let's hope these guys don't become the next... My Morning Jacket. "House" or "Material Things" or "Little Girl" or whatever it's called is the only new song they've been playing live that sounds good to me at home on speakers. Then again they haven't put out anything bad in awhile so maybe we should trust what they're doing.
Dr. Rosenpenis
Tasty place is soo soo good.

I'd like it slightly more fleshed out. Heard it was insane at P4K fest.
simakos
that clip is great and yes, if i remember correctly, i really enjoyed this song at Pitchfork. but you gotta admit, how badass would that tune and all of their tunes be if they had a powerful drummer, a touch more guitar, and maybe some fucking horns. could be huge.

Sold on this. Really, just anything more would do it for me pretty huge. Think that's why I'm jazzed to see how this turns out in the studio.

rofl, are you kidding me?

best band on the planet obvs, this is going to be mind blowing. go back and listen to the strawberry jam bootlegs half a year before the record came out, and then what was put on record. if you don't trust me, you're a fool

what? you don't like horns? if used correctly, horns make everything taste better. everything.

Where can I find these bootlegs?
And for the record, you've got a damn good point up there with that "best band on the planet" statement.
And shit, AC can flipping pull anything off. If there were horns, they'd make them great.

Chronotm

Chrono's probably otm w/r/t the quality of the record and band, but most certainly on the money when it comes down to the whole bootleg/album deal. It's ridiculous that the lot of you are criticizing the album without actually HEARING THE FUCKING THING. AC are a completely different beast live and in studio. Wait for it to leak in a month or so and then talk your shit. See you then.
Bruegel
I actually meant otm for the...

but I concur on all fronts
dicorice
Oh yeah, that. Right-o: sign me up for the AC Anti-Horn Immunization League, too.

What is that pic of bruegel? My interweb is playing a lot of games with me tonight...

I also concur. Want album to leak. Want to hear. Want to buy. Want to go see live. Want to worship. Fuck, animal collective is stupendous.

Edit: it just popped up. No horns. Got it.

Chicken Invaders!
Horns + AC = potentially mindblowing. Seriously if they drop the cheese dick electronic bullshit of all these new songs live and flesh them out like simakos said like it could be like Zombie or something. Ha. Can you imagine?
Chronodiggity
it's funny how people are trying to make a band like Animal Collective conform to rockist values

so bizarre
Montana
These guys need to get some actual musicians in the band to get to the next level. Enough of chanting over the same riff for four minutes. A proper keyboard player and a drummer would be ideal.
Bruegel
Can we start a new thread about the album, preferably with a strict invite policy and a prison?

Montana, Simakos and Dark Heat can stay here and play Fantasy Animal Collective. I like mine with cheese dick electronic bullshit, repetitive riffs and incompetent musicians thanks.
Mitchell
I'm certainly not a big fan by any stretch of the imagination but "I wish this band didn't sound quite so much like Animal Collective" is only really a legitimate criticism when aimed at bands that aren't AC surely.

hey, don't lump me in with with other people... i love AC and all of the weird directions they have taken.

i just really like horns... and anyone who completely writes off horns in general is a fool. when used properly, they can invoke so much beauty...

also, count me in the AC camp that believes that they are getting better with each new release.

last year i named my fantasy football team 'Reverend Green' and did shockingly well

this year, i named it something completely different and am failing miserably

correlation?

You've got me all wrong. I dig the band a lot. I was really only basing what I said last post about the new songs that I've listened to. They're very repetetive, and I don't think the instrumentation that they've been using for the songs works very well in their favor. I'm sure in a real live setting they come off far better than they do through a youtube video, but I'm just not hearing anything that's interesting enough to carry the idea for more than 2 or three minutes, and most of the songs seem to be stretched around to past 6.

Take "Brother Sport," which at this point I really don't think I like. The middle section: it is, almost literally, Avey screaming and banging on a piano with one hand for a few minutes, with not much else beside some goofy little electronic background. I can see it being an interesting finished studio product, but it's going to take a lot to convince me with that song. some other ones like "Bearhug"/Whatever it's called now, actually sound awesome. the "I wanna walk around with you" bit had me very excited the other night when I listened to it. But we'll see.

I would love to hear what Animal Collective could do with some horns. Could be really amazing. That said, there is no way this album is going to be anything less than fantastic. No matter what.
Easily Fooled
horns is almost the exact opposite of what i would want to hear on this album. also, brother sport owns, im not understanding this hate at all. while the versions we have right now are simple and "chanty"/"goofy," i find myself really enjoying it. when they are actually singing in brother sport it is right up there with anything they have made and the sections in between i just jam and get really excited for the verses(or chorus?) again.
Burz
Some guy over at ILM posted this

QUOTE
it's a studio album and it's amazing. if you witnessed those last round of shows, it's that sound, finally captured. along the trajectories of Person Pitch and the Pantha du Prince remix, but on a whole other level.
my initial reaction (only heard it once) is that it's their Loveless/ Screamadelica, a massive leap forward in sound 'n' frequencies, a total summation of their powers, craft, and influences, their most cohesive "album" and a trip unto itself.

Yeah, this is gonna rule.
