10 Reasons Why You Should Give Janelle Monáe A Shot

1. Her debut CD, Metroplis: The Chase is a concept EP that is the first of four releases. It's about an android who falls in love with a human—a crime in the year 2719, and is suddenly on the lam.

2. Said CD is being released tomorrow. Oh the relevance!

3. "Sincerly, Jane" made an ad for NBC's Lipstick Jungle watchable. Listen:

4. Her music is adventurous R&B set to some serious Atlanta sci-fi boogie. RIYL: Outkast, Gnarls Barkley and Kelis (you guys like Gnarls Barkley, right?)

5. She has a very strong and controlled alto, which makes for pleasant listening.

6. Diddy signed her to Bad Boy, and deep down inside, you're secretly wishing that he'll find another superstar act that's actually listenable.

7.

8. I've talked to her on the phone and she's as sweet as pie.

9. Because you're a SOMBie and you need a cool new name to casually drop in conversation.

10. Because I'm vouching for her.

That top song is pretty badass on first listen.

"Sincerely Jane" is spectacular.

Tito the Builder
Wasn't Kanye's robo-fuck buddy also named "Jane?"

Oh, I've also included her latest single, "Many Moons", as part of my muxtape for this month. It'll be up until September. It is also very delightful.

Plus a shamelessly glowing piece at PopMatters today. That's three times in 24 hours I've read stuff about this girl. I liked that one song that was mentioned upthread.
Senor Cardgage Again
Bumping this thread cuz the EP is gold.

Houch
And she's on the cover of September's Paste magazine:

No problem man! Glad I could help!

Her music is gorgeous and she's cute as a button. I love The Audition.

I'm liking this. "Sincerely, Jane" probably has the best chance to be a big hit for the same reasons that it's my least favorite track. That one's just too close to being in that pseudo-soul realm that's all over VH1 these days (Duffy, Adele, etc) for me.
Midnite_Vulture
Video for "Many Moons" is out. If she isn't huge by this time next year...

JeffTweedysFatStomach
I've been liking her a lot but man she needs to lose that silly haircut.

But it's the music that counts and she's top notch. I would be really surprised if a hit doesn't come along from her sooner rather than later.
musicgurl
I saw Janelle on that "I Want To Work For Diddy" show on VH1, I had no idea she was on Bad Boy. WTF is a cool, unusual artist doing on Puffy's label? blink.gif

Her sound is nice. Musicgurl approves.

Ha, weird. I listened to Metropolis Chase Suite about 10 times today. Such a great record. She needs to be huge. The Andre 3000 comparison is unavoidable considering the video for "Many Moons" is basically "Hey Ya" in Spielberg's A.I. Even her dance moves are straight up Andre.
