Katy Perry fills the pop-rock voice left by Avril when she went shit. Katy's music is pretty inoffensive, and she has some pretty fucking catchy tunes - "Hot N Cold," "Waking Up In Vegas."

As far as looks, Zooey Deschanel's better.

Katy's fairly hot, yeah. My type fo sho. And her album isn't half bad once you get past that obnoxious single. It's a rare case of lyrics being so patently offensive that they ruin the song for me.

they did this shit at my job. i was doing transfers at work for "One Tree Hill" and they had this lame storyline about this band fronted by Kevin Federline of all people. he had a moody goth girl as his keyboardist who one of the lead characters of the show realized had more potential than the rest of the band. the band sucked period and the lead got the goth girl out of the situation and did this lame story arc on how she was going to be the key artist for the record label.

as i worked on this shit, i had a nagging feeling that this goth girl was on the show to promote her career and the show was being used to promote her and her shitty music that she had so many times to sing in the episodes after she was involved in shitty drama dialog. sure enough, turns out that the girl is a artist on myspace's record label and being on the show worked: her new album debuted in the Top 40. and when i saw the final masters later, they had blatant ads promoting her and her music after each episode.

I'm of the opposite opinion: Sobule's is playful, with faux innocence masking a knowing smirk, where Perry's is all up front, hitting the right poses but not putting anything behind them. Not that I necessarily think Sobule's is "hot" or anything, just that Perry's is slick and plastic and false.

The ironic thing about all the hipster nerdlust over Zooey Deschanel is that she's the sort of Movie Star Crush that hipster types like to have because she "seems so different" than your usual Hollywood starlet types that have nothing to offer but their looks.

What's ironic about that is that I doubt they could name one movie that Zooey has been really amazing in because there really hasnt been one because she's very very very limited as an actress (as of my writing this anyway)
She has one mode: wide-eyed vacant masquerading as deep.

Thus, they are still crushing on looks alone superficially, it's just that they are Indie-approved looks that carry the pretense of substance. It's the exact same lameness in different clothes.

I'm not saying you're totally wrong on your Zooey Theory as it pertains to most people or hipster nerds, but for me it's not that she "seems so different". She's just very attractive and she seems to have a likable, sarcastic personality when I've seen her interviewed and such. Samantha Morton's a much better actress than Zooey. That's not even remotely close. Zooey doesn't have a lot of range, but I'd argue that she's had mostly solid-to-very good supporting roles in decent-to-very good movies so far in her career and I love her in All the Real Girls.

Anyway, I think I'd rather have dinner with Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhall anyway.

circa 2005: decent movies like Hitchhiker and well-intentioned misses like Winter Passing

circa 2007-2008: unwatchable garbage like Flakes and The Happening

Night Shyamalan film, the holiday Jim Carrey film, the Assassination of Robert Ford, and a McConaughey/Sarah Jessica Parker comedy in the past three years means her career is going in the right direction. Now, if the Carrey thing bombs like The Happening did, her career could spiral, but this is surely the absolute peak of her career if it's defined the way most jobs are-- money, status, profile, opportunity.
