The first few times I listened to this, I thought it was ridiculously front-loaded with "The Modern Leper" and "Good Arms vs Bad Arms" spurting out in the first three tracks and then dribbling to a conclusion. Five plus listens in, I don't know what the fuck I was thinking. Great songs, although I feel like they could do with a little more muscle behind 'em sometimes.

glad you're all loving the record. the live shows this week have been amazing. The Mercury Lounge show was great... solid, consistent, charming, and perfect.
the Philly show sounded amazing, and the live version of Keep Yourself Warm was stunning. Scott's been adding a couple of lines from a Twilight Sad song at the end of it, and it sounds magical.
Boston was the loudest and meanest set i've ever seen them play. just blistering and awesome.
and last night at Union Pool they stretched out and did a nice full 50 minutes. I Feel Better, which they'd never played live until the last 2 months, is really standing out at all of these shows.
they've been working on a live version of The Twist in practice, but have NEVER played it live in any form at this point. they hope to have it figured out by the time they come back to the USA in June.

Where'd they play, TT the Bear's? I played there last August, with Dolly Varden, and there was a Scottish dude in the crowd with his girlfriend. We chatted on the street after the show and I asked if he'd heard of Frightened Rabbit, but he said he hadn't. Coulda been my accent, though.

Mainly Mr. Smalls in millvale (people who have played there in the past:Girl Talk, Built to Spill, The Fiery Furnaces, Broken Social Scene, Peter bjorn and John)
the Warhol Museum, (Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom, Vampire Weekend)
Club Deisel (Mirah, White Rabbits, the Walkmen, the Pipettes)
the Rex (some guys I don't enjoy)
Club Cafe. (I forget who played here as well)
most likely the best place for an audience would be at club deisel in South Side pittsburgh. Not an enormous venue but would most likely have to fall on a weekday. not sure if that gave you any info you didn't know.

So was this TT the Bear's, in Cambridge? We fought a ridiculously loud PA--not to mention a 'Nam-era soundguy who we presumed was almost completely deaf--the whole night. It wound up being our 'alt country' show of the tour. We kinda played with a chip, actually tore it up a little--one of those shows where encountering such obstacles actually leads you to places, musically, that surprise you. I wish that show was recorded...but that's the whole thing about live music, I guess--it's all about that moment.
And, oh yeah, I can't wait to get this new Frightened Rabbit record--out in mid-April, right?

Boston show was downstairs at The Middle East opening up for Sons & Daughters and Bodies Of Water. FR played loud, and the soundguy mixed it even louder. and it sounded great. the chords of Keep Yourself Warm were chunky and viscous, I Feel Better simply hurtled and galloped by... and the "The Greys into Square 9" closer was epic.
And then the band got drunk and yelled for David from Sons & Daughters to play a drum solo throughout the entire S&D set.
good times.

here's a link to the These United States album:
http://rapidshare.com/files/102836066/Thes...States.rar.html the one thing about this album... ok... two things... 1) it's just not as good as the songs are live (shocking) and 2) it's kinda back-loaded... i really like the songs at the end better than the songs up front. unsure why they did that. (although "Preface", the opening song, is pretty amazing. kinda FR'ey in that right when it grabs you, it's gone.)

Random thoughts about this record:
I think the Modern Leper would have been a better album closer than opener. It is the perfect "end of the movie" song. Every time I have heard it, from demo to now, I have pictured the ending credits of a movie starting to roll, and I'm sitting there in the theater listening to this song after watching a completely gut wrenching film about heartbreak, loss, tragedy, and despair. The unique moment where that song fits so perfectly with what you experienced that you sit in the theater to the very, very end. Still, I think this could be one of the best songs that I've heard in the last ten or fifteen years.
If you made a very cute & sincere video for Old Old Fashioned and got in on VH1, I'd bet it would sell a lot of records. And I don't mean that as a dig. I wrote to simakos a few days go that I want to move to a cabin in the woods with my wife and son and listen to this song over and over again. This song has mass appeal. It would be one of those "XRT songs" that is actually really great.
I think this band speaks in their own unique language, which is always the hallmark of a great band to me. There are bits and pieces of songs here and there that are reminiscent of other songs and artists, but FR make those bits their own. They have their own perspective & vocabulary.
I initially wasn't as taken by this record as the first, because I mistakenly thought the bigger sound sacrificed some of the band's unique charm. I'm not sure why I thought that, to tell you the truth. This is a far superior record. The songwriting is craftsman-like and much more mature and the arrangements are inspired.

totally agree, obviously... that's what i'm most impressed with, their unique and original sound within a pretty loaded genre of pop rock music.

and i kinda love it...but mostly because of three songs:
Keep Yourself Warm
My Backwards Walk
The Modern Leper
(in that order)
----------------------------------------------------
The one song that I want to punch the lead singer in the face for is Old Old Fashioned. I mean Counting Crows has a place in my heart..but I don't want to hear Frightened Rabbit sounding like them...It reminiscent of Mrs. Potters Lullaby and it doesn't sit well with me.
But overall, truly happy with this album! Good sophomore effort!

here's that Sera Cahoone record i was talking about yesterday.
http://rapidshare.com/files/103060167/Sera_Cahoone.rar.html the return of the Counting Crows references... oh, my. i have to admit, i really don't hear it. i mean... i hear it, but i don't HEAR it. Scott's emoting vs. Adam's effecting just isn't even a comparison.
and, yes... i was there for Mr. Jones or whatever the first time around, and i've been as annoyed by the Joni Mitchell cover playing on Muzak in KMart as much as anybody else. but i still don't hear Scott's voice and immediately start gagging on the CC memories.
it is worth noting that my involvement with the band, ultimately, stems from writing them a gushing fan email to the generic contact info on their website. so, i am fan first and manager second.
anyway... i can't be bothered with listening to Frightened Rabbit today, as today (apparently) is dedicated to listening to "Lovey" by The Lemonheads over and over and over...

RE: pittsburgh
personally i'd love them to play every secondary and tertiary market in the country, but... we just can't spend that much time to do it. If they were based in the USA it would be a little easier, but... still, it's hard to dedicate the 3 months it really takes if you want to play Pittsburgh, Winston/Salem, Oberlin, Orlando, Northampton, Tucson, Lawrence, Charleston, Burlington, Sacramento, Bellingham, Eugene, Des Moines, etc.
these are all places where people really live and are starved for quality national and international entertainment/talent, but... it's just freaking hard.
but... i will speak with our agent and see if he thinks we can at least look for some offers in pittsburgh. i'm pretty sure i'll know what he'll say, and i'm pretty sure what the venues will probably say when we ask them for holds/offers: who?
and now... have slightly moved on. there's Holy Fuck playing on the stereo, while one ear of the shitty earbuds ('cause i forgot my Sennheisers today) is still cruising through Lovey...

Ok, so true yet creepy story
I got on the Division bus yesterday around 545 or 6 and I sit down next to this dapper beaded looking fella
Now, I have a really really creepy tendency to sort of glance around at my surroundings, and in the year that I've lived in the city, I've trained my eyes to sort of become fixated on someone's iPod without really staring at it just so I can see what they are listening to and judge them accordingly
Anyway, I glance over at the guy's iPod next to me and he had this new Frightened Rabbit album on
I wanted to nudge him, offer him a fist bump and say "Pardon me...Sound Opinions?" but he seemed disinterested in life and everyone around him
So longstory short, I look at people's iPod's and judge their musical selection like some sort of uber-creep.
Sincerely,
The guy who still hasn't listened to this new, hip album
