Should I get over their name (and myself) and check this band out? My friends were at the show and text me that "the opener was better than the headliner."

Yes. Yes you should. Midnight Organ Fight. Album of the year. So pretty and so heartbreaking and so everything that music should be.

Yeah, I was gonna say something about that in my post. I drove past a $4.49 regular on the way down there today.

and you're not so bad, yourself, my golden shirt wearing chum

Following their set (which thoroughly impressed me), Yancy turned to me and said wait until I see/hear the drums in an enclosed setting. So I guess that means I absolutely have to go next Thursday to see how thunderous those beasts can be. Colour me stoke'd.

reporting from blocks away in Edgewater i have to say that sure was a fun way to spend a sunday afternoon, eh?

a friend of mine took a bunch of shots with his digital xlr and will hopefully be sending them my way soon. backstage was fun listening the rabbits make fun of Gil Mantera's Party Dream. they said they would love to see them try and pull that stuff in Glasgow. there was talk of a shower of bottles thrown at them and that they might not even fly on a gay night in their town. it was funny...

yeah, that was really my only complaint with the sound. at the Double Door show, every time he hit one of his toms it was just huge. can't wait for the 3rd installment of their Chicago residency. i think i convinced them to play Go-Go Girls for the next show.

You should've convinced them to play "My Backwards Walk" too. 'twas my only complaint with yesterday's show.

I really, really liked "Old, Old Fashioned" yesterday though.

i'm pretty sure that's not "The Twist" as pictured above... scott plays keyboards on that one. i'm guessing maybe that's "I Feel Better" with Billy singing backing vocals and Andy alternating between keyboards and guitar?

but... glad ya'll enjoyed the shows! hopefully i'll be out for the one with Oxford Collapse.

no, Bobzilla was just labeling those with the 2 songs that they didn't play at Double Door the other nite but did play at the fest, i think. Scott seemed so excited to be playing to such a big crowd outside. he snapped a couple pics, it was cute.

the boys told me it will be Grant's birthday celebration after the Bottle show... hopefully i don't work the next day.

Dammit, I'm flying back that night from LA for work travel. My flight gets in at 1:17 AM. Will the party still be going on? If not, I'll just send him a card.

if we're not at the Riptide Lounge at 1:17 AM (or 2:17 AM, or 3:17 AM), there's a serious problem.

Haha, awesome. I might have to be part of a full-fledged SOMB gathering rather than just making a cameo this time 'round. Work be damned.

I left early. I was nodding off. Not because of the music. I was just zonked. It was clear from the set-ups/times that Efterklang were gonna go 'til 12:45-1 AM. As it is I have to be up in four hours.

Slaraffenland were pretty cool. Bought their lovingly packaged full length and tour CDs. Was hoping that they'd have Efterklang's "Caravan" single on vinyl. Nuh uh.

By the way, a free Empty Bottle show meant a full house or pretty close to it, even past 11:30 PM on a Monday night to hear a couple of Danish art-rock bands. Learn this lesson, Oxford Collapse/Frightened Rabbit showgoers.

are these 7"s? If so, where can I go about getting them? Tell your bunny buddies to give me them ASAP.

they were selling the Head Rolls Off at the Double Door show, but not at the fest. Fast Blood hasn't been released yet. you can buy them on the Fat Cat site.
Hewletts Daughter
So my one roommate I think is going to check these guys out with me on Thursday which is a great idea on his part. Especially considering he's never heard them.

]edit; this might be the worst post i've ever made in the history of internet

simakos
i can't wait to hear them on a proper sound system... the Double door was good and the fest had it's problems, but the Bottle's sound is going to be great. i should record it on my minidisc.

should i?
Hewletts Daughter
you'd really be foolish not to

i mean, it will sound outstanding, no doubt. why not record it so we can relive all the free heartwarming memories?

simakos
i wonder if i can get that thing plugged into the soundboard?

does anyone know how this free show is gonna work?...i finally got around to listening to this album this weekend and let me say this is my fav of 2008 so far...its pretty much blowing my world up...

As uberfan #1 you're easily entitled to this.

I should take Friday off work, right? Are there post-Bottle plans (High Dive?), or is that a private party?

People who like fun should show up early Thursday night for Tigercity.

I was thinking the same thing (assuming it's not a provate party for VIPs only).

If tahts the case, though, Yancy, party at my place. We'll play Rock Band and drink Schlitz.

doesnt the show start then?...dont you think itll be at capacity by then?...i mean thursday night...bottle...free show...two solid bands...??
Hewletts Daughter
yeah, it does start at 9

and you raise a good point

maybe i'll get there a little earlier to scope out the scene and drink copious amounts of drinks

nagode
yeah the other thing im worried about is that if you look at the bands myspace pages they have listed for some of these shows that they are free...and im afraid there may be some sort of list...like some sort of sponsored event...but its the bottle so chances are its prolly not...
Hewletts Daughter
i'll get in there one way or another. if i have to wait outside the door for a person to go for a smoke and then i sneak in as them, then so be it.

alls i know is i am going tomorrow and you will, too, new Frightened Rabbit fan

THREE solid bands. The openers Tigercity are good. My only problem with them the time I saw them was their front man was this suave urbane crooner with an ascot and jacket, and the rest of the band were all shaggy-haired flannel-clad dudes. Pretty cool soul-dance-funk tunes though.

Having been to the Bottle a week ago Monday for a free show with household names Efterklang and Slaraffenland, and arriving shortly before 10 PM and confronting a 3/4 full room which was all but filled by 10:30 or so, I can tell you that it's in your best interest to get there sooner rather later.

And I'll be there. My trip was cancelled. smile.gif

i'll be there at 8. let's all go early and get loaded.

Haha. I remember that night. I also remember thinking "Where the hell is Yancy? He'd love these guys." But in typical Yancy fashion he arrived at the very moment the band he wanted to see started. He has a gift.

Crap. I should be going to this, but I don't think I can.
nagode
why cant it be 5 o clock already...me and wolfgang and some other friends will prolly be bbqing after work/before the show if anyone wants to come on over PM me...not very far from the bottle...western and armitage...
