I bet that was Montana I was sitting next to!

If it was not and it was someone else in this thread, please identify yourself immediately

If no such action occurs, I will consider taking this to the MISSED CONNECTIONS department on Craigslist so that I can find Simakos' long lost mate

hmmm... what to post so that this gets bumped higher up the list?

oh... i know... there's talk of doing some FR shows in June with Oxford Collapse, whose new record (August on Sub Pop) is so freaking good it's gonna make some people poo in their pants.

poo. right there. in their pants.

i can't send the Sub Pop album yet, but... here's the link to the new 12" single they are putting out on Jon Solomon's new label (the guy that used to run My Pal God... and used to book The Empty Bottle with Bruce many eons ago!):

http://www.comedyminusone.com/004.php

Oxford Collapse recorded 30 songs for their new album... thought about doing their Double Nickles On The Dime or Warehouses Songs And Stories, but then thought the better of it. so they have an album on Sub Pop in August, this 12" in June, and a 7" on Flameshovel sometime soon.

and, yes... the "Genetic Engineering" on the 12" is an OMD cover.

So, uh, this Oxford Collapse news is, uh, exciting [promptly poos in pants].

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

i was just kind of joking about sending the record. i figured it was too early.

i think Oxford Collapse is a good match for Thee Rabbits as far as touring goes...

i keep listening to the drums on this new one. Grant is such a interesting and peculiar drummer.

Should I go to the London show end of April and shout SOMB?
simakos
no, just shout "THOSE GUYS FROM CHICAGO!"
selfstarter
i don't know if they'd get SOMB, but... you could definitely yell "sound opinions" and they'll probably call you a dork and run like hell.

for those of you in Chicago, there's a decent show there tomorrow night at The Hideout by that DC band These United States i posted a bit earlier in the thread. i think they play at 10:00 PM.

(i should note that i don't work with either These United States or Oxford Collapse. or Sera Cahoone. or any other band i may have mentioned besides FR.)

I'm kinda liking the new French Kicks after a few listens, but this pairing strikes me as strange:

FRENCH KICKS, FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Double Door, 5/29, on sale noon Saturday (4/12)

Somebody go poke that hibernating bear and let him know.

yeah i haven't even givin the new FK disc a spin myself. looks like i'm going to have to get on that. I'm assuming that that FR are the openers.

I'm pretty disappointed by this. Seeing French Kicks at Schuba's last year was a bore, but I don't really want to miss Frightened Rabbit.

was just getting ready to post about the chicago date, but... somebody beat me to the punch.

but... if you don't want to see 'em with The French Kicks, you're going to have another opportunity:

May 29 2008 Double Door w/ French Kicks Chicago, Illinois

June 1 2008 Do Division Festival Chicago, Illinois
http://www.do-divisionstreetfest.com/

they haven't announced all the bands for that Do Division Fest yet, but... there are some good ones. Ted Leo, Gil Mantera's Party Dream, The 1900's, etc. i think FR are currently scheduled for 3:00 PM.

This lineup is outstanding. Thanks for the heads up! I will certainly be there with bells on. Any idea on the rest of the lineup or what have you?

selfstarter
I'm not sure of rest of lineup. I'm actually probably not supposed to be letting that info fly as of yet, but... what the hell. only live once.

Frightened Rabbit are doing 2 weeks of dates with French Kicks. it's not the entire Frightened Rabbit tour. There will be 4 more weeks of FR shows announced within the next 10 days or so.

also... the FR album had a screw-up in the manufacturing, so the physical copies won't be in stores until April 29th. digital release will still be the 15th, but... can't buy the cd (except on import) until April 29th.

but, i can say: they came out pretty spectacular. even better than i had ever imagined.

Oh man. After that British Sea Power support gig, if 1900's are playing on the same day anywhere near the time FR are playing, I think Simakos will end up ripping the medallion right off their singer's neck.
selfstarter
well THAT sounds like a story i need to hear.

on a glaringly-cheesy promotional aside:

Frightened Rabbit will be on Fearless Music TV this weekend, performing "The Modern Leper". Check out the time and channel listing at the Fearless Music Myspace blog to find out when and where it airs: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...logID=356905129 (it's on Saturday nights in most markets).

Before and after the episode airs, fans should go to the Fearless Music website http://www.fearlessmusic.tv and vote for Frightened Rabbit. The band that receives the highest amounts of votes will be featured again on next week's episode. And, honestly, the taping came out amazing, so I just want to see more of it myself!
itsme
I see that they're also playing the Bottle on June 12, opening for Oxford Collapse. They might as well move here they're playing Chicago so much.
selfstarter
well, damn! i was sworn to secrecy on that one, but... I guess the Bottle put it on their site already, so... yeah... three chicago shows, and 2 of 'em free!

now i'm jealous of you guys!

THE MIDNIGHT ORGAN FIGHT - OUT TODAAAAAAY

Hells yeah.

Our second album The Midnight Organ Fight is released TODAY (14th April 2008) in the UK. So in case you weren't sure whether to purchase the record or that sweater that you're not certain suits you, here are a few words people have written on the subject (of the album, not the sweater).

They sound like The Who playing in a Wickerman, a funeral pyre for folk, rock and anything else musically combustible. Most acts can't produce two records as good as this and debut album Sing The Greys in a career, let alone a matter of months.
5/5
Scotland on Sunday

Frightened Rabbit aren't the first band to explore loneliness, horniness, or emptiness in song, just like they aren't the first set of siblings to decide to jam together, but their jangly melodies claw their way inside your brain just the same, making them latest in a long line of Glasgow bands to effortlessly combine celebratory sonics and miserablist lyrics into something singular.

Bleak though 'The Midnight Organ Fight' is, it's also utterly beautiful. Anyone who's ever had their soul squashed like a grape by a heartless partner will be able to relate to these tales of love, loss and general despondency. Its a dark tunnel, but this record is worth it.

ok, so I finally got around to hearing this last week. Fuck. It's so good. Like, not just good-good. Like, really, really good. Heartwarmingly good.

"Good Arms Vs. Bad Arms" is absolutely gorgeous.

And never in my life did i think I would say that a song with the lyric "You're the shit and I'm knee-deep in it" would be heartbreaking and beautiful, but here we are.

Overall, I give this new disc a 6 out of 5.

Might be my favorite thing I've heard in a really long time.

There are a bunch of great musical one liners in more fun way, but similarly to, Doug Martsch. Although I wouldn't say they are at the same level (where Doug is > than Frightened Rabbit Lyrically at least) They both have a great way of playing with words to get great reactions and it's part of what made Frightened Rabbit's debut great as well.

1. Vital Parts fall from his system and disolve in scottish rain
Vitally he doesn't miss, and he's too fucked up to care.
(correct me if I'm wrong, but that scottish rain would be hard alcohol, explaining why he is too fucked up to care. My version of it.)

2. Leave the rest, at arms length
When they reach out, don't touch them, don't touch them.
Don't brush with him, he might have diseases.

3. It takes more than fucking someone you don't know
to keep yourself warm.

(also love the way he says "I'm drunk, I'm drunk, and you're probably on pills". It's almost like he has given up in order to be happy)
all great lines. Dig em.

Frightened Rabbit
The Midnight Organ Fight

(FatCat)

Reviewed by Josh Modell
April 15th, 2008

"It takes more than fucking someone you don't know to keep warm," sings Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison on "Keep Yourself Warm," and it sounds like resignation as well as a grand statement of purpose. It's the emotional apex of the Scottish band's dark, terrific second album, which circles the drain of failed relationships and bad sex—and somehow finds sparks of hope in mountains of crushing hopelessness. (Think a slightly sunnier version of Arab Strap, another pack of dour Scots.) Supposedly inspired by a particularly harsh breakup, The Midnight Organ Fight finds Hutchison longing folkishly for better times (the jangling "Old Old Fashioned"), then considering—but ultimately dismissing—suicide ("Floating In The Forth"). On "Poke," he suggests this method for dealing with a failed relationship: "Should we kick its cunt in / and watch as it dies from bleeding?" It's all dressed in familiar-sounding indie-rock, with bits of Sebadoh, The Long Winters, and early U2 providing the road map. But it's Hutchison's utterly believable desperation and frank lyrics that push the whole thing from good to great. It doesn't make for easy listening, but nothing this flatly honest and powerful ever is.

A.V. Club Rating: A-

Modell always gets it right... anybody remember Milk Magazine?
